Flying Around Honolulu By Open Door Helicopter
8th October 2017
While on my first trip to Hawaii, I was lucky enough to be able to take an open door helicopter trip with Magnum Helicopters in September, on a perfectly clear day in Honolulu. Although this was actually my idea as part of a work incentive trip, I was absolutely terrified as I don’t like heights or flying, and have never been in a helicopter! Brilliant start.
Interestingly, the helicopters take off from right near the airport so we headed there first. There was so much Alex O’Loughlin and Hawaii Five-O paraphernalia in their shop, and it turns out their helicopters are sometimes used by the filming crew (SCREAMING!!!)
After a safety briefing, we were hauled into our helicopters and strapped in. There were only 4 per open air helicopter, and I sat on the front right, with direct access to the great outdoors! As soon as we took off, I knew this would be something to remember forever.
I had nothing to worry about as our pilot was so hilarious and calming, and the weather was perfect. We could see for MILES around Honolulu. The 50 minute tour aims to go around most of the island, from Waikiki (we saw our hotel!) to Diamond Head, the famous ‘Jurassic Park’ canyon and Pearl Harbour.
If you are ever in Honolulu, I strongly recommend you take this tour. The views are unlike anything you’ll have seen before, and the sensation of being in an open door helicopter is something I won’t forget!
